A Girls’ Guide to Travelling Alone

THE ULTIMATE TRAVEL LIST BY LONELY PLANET

The Ultimate Travel List by Lonely Planet

I was gifted a copy of Lonely Planet’s ‘Ultimate Travel List’ to review. I only ever write 100% honest reviews and would never promote something I didn’t love.

This is the new edition of Lonely Planet’s
Ultimate Travel List and showcases the 500 most thrilling, memorable places on earth. And the folks at Lonely Planet have ranked them in order of brilliance.

So how did they pick the 500 best places on the planet?

These must-see places were chosen from every single Lonely Planet guide, then the options were shared with everyone in the Lonely Planet community, who then voted on their favourites.

This is the second edition of this book and has been updated with over 200 new entries. These are places which may be more relevant to the way in which we travel today, sights that are managing tourism sustainably or places that have simply upped their game since last time.

How to use this book

If you’re anything like me (someone who just loves a list), the full 500 list is indexed, in order at the front of the book, so you can quickly scan to see how many you’ve done or more importantly which ones you want to do next! I won’t give anything away but the number one ranked place in the world surprised me, but it’s definitely one which is high up on my wish list (perhaps even higher now).

Then before you get into it, there are beautiful illustrations of each continent, with pins dropped on their special places of interest. And this for me is one of my favourite features as it can also help you plan an upcoming trip if you’re headed to that part of the world.

How to start your wish list if next year still feels a bit unsure

With 2020 being the unpredictable year that it was for travel, you may be slightly hesitant to make any travel plans for next year, but no matter where you are in the world, there are plenty of adventures to be had closer to home. For example I live in London, and there are 34 amazing places listed in the UK alone that could keep me going. In fact, there are a couple that I’m already planning for next year, including Glen Coe and Loch Lomond.

Alongside the top 500, this book is PACKED full of beautiful photography, and each place also has some extra tips on how to plan your visits and how to make the most of your time there, for example, the best way to catch a glimpse of Geisha life in Kyoto, or the best time of year to spot wildlife in Etosha National Park. And did you know that since it’s 600th anniversary, the Forbidden City in Beijing has now opened up more areas to the public than ever before? And another on my Wishlist, exploring the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland can be done by car, by bus or by bike, and you can pick up a Wild Atlantic Way passport and get it stamped along the way!
